Devlog #1: From a Struggling Machine to a Fresh Start – The Road to Gaia
Hey everyone! Welcome to the first devlog for Gaia! 🎉
This journey started on a machine that felt like it belonged in the ancient ruins of Mount Olympus—slow, unresponsive, and constantly reminding me that game development isn’t just about coding, but about patience… a lot of patience.
For the longest time, every action felt like an epic battle against lag. Compiling? 5 minutes. Opening Unity? Go grab a coffee. Running the game? I hope you’ve got a book to read. Every small change took ages to test, and I started to feel like Sisyphus, rolling a boulder uphill, only for my editor to freeze and crash. And I am not even talking yet about streaming, because it sure as heck isn't fun to hear that you move a little once every 4 seconds.
But after countless frustrations (and maybe a few threats to throw my laptop into the sea of Poseidon 🌊), I finally got my hands on a somewhat better machine. And let me tell you—it feels like I unlocked a double-jump in real life. No more 10-minute waits just to see if a sprite moves correctly. No more development sessions where I write a devlog because Unity is still opening. (ok ok, I didn't actually write any devlogs until now)
What This Means for Gaia
Now that I can actually iterate at a reasonable pace, I’m taking a new approach:
✅ Frequent updates – I’ll be dropping early builds on this page, even when things are still messy.
✅ Devlogs with progress & failures – Expect honest updates, including when things go hilariously wrong.
✅ More engagement – I want you to be part of this journey, so let me know what you’d love to see!
It’s still early, but Gaia is finally moving forward at full speed (or at least, a reasonable human speed when the developer has a fulltime job). If you want to follow along, hit that follow button, join the discussion, and let’s make Gaia the most accessible and awesome pixel-art platformer together!
🔥 Next Devlog Teaser: How do you design a game where everyone can play, no matter their abilities? I’ll dive into the first steps of Gaia's accessibility features!
